Chapter 7

The women spent the remainder of the day resting while I worked on making some cordage.

I used my knife and a flat rock to dig up some tree roots from different trees so I could see which one worked best. When I found some that had the right texture, I split them into two sections, and rubbed off the outer bark by rubbing the root sections back and forth over a limb with rougher bark. I wanted to soak them so they didn't get brittle but didn't want to waste water.

I also cut open the trunk of a nearby tree to strip off a section of the bark and then peeled off long strips of the inner fiber. With those in hand, I began putting the fiber strands on my thigh and rubbing my hand back and forth over them.

Erica lay by the fire, drumming her fingers on the dirt. "I'm so fucking bored."

Mei-Ling looked up from the box of medications she sorted. "I'd rather be bored than running for my life."

"Speak for yourself. I love an adrenaline rush."

"This is kind of nice for me. For years, I've been working all the time. My older brother was promoted to Chief Medical Officer when he was my age so I thought I had to catch up to him. I tried to finish my schooling a year ahead of schedule and now I'm focused on getting promoted to Medical Director of the emergency department at the hospital where I worked. No time for a break even or a hobby. I never took a vacation and worked extra rounds whenever I could. It's nice to just sit quietly for a while. And you need to rest. Get some sleep."

"I can't sleep with the sun up." She looked at me. "What's that you're doing, Jake?"

"Making rope. I'm buffing the fibers to soften them so they're more flexible and remove any remaining bark."

"Won't that make them too soft?"

"No, you want the fibers to be very thin and soft. The thinner and softer the fibers are, the better we'll be able to twist them together. The twisting is what gives the rope strength."

"Well, at least you have a hobby."

Naomi fiddled with her scanner. "Do you wanna play twenty questions?"

"No. I want to watch a movie. Or TV." She nodded at Mei-Ling. "What movie were you watching on the ride over?"

Mei-Ling glanced at her with a shake of her head. "Oh, uh, it was nothing."

"Oh, come on. What was it, porn?"

"No," Mei-Ling gasped. "Of course not. I would never watch that."

"Shit, I watch it all the time. I could use some right now."

Naomi burst out laughing while Mei-Ling just blushed.

"Come on," Erica continued. "What movie was it?"

"Fine, it was a Qoulean drama. A romance. Gentle Lotus Blossoms."

Naomi gasped. "Oh, I love that show."

"You do?"

"Yes, I've seen that and the remake, Tender Flowers."

Mei-Ling's eyes lit up. "I haven't seen that. I want to, though."

"When we get the data feed going, you and I have to binge watch it.
